About Dr. Brenda Lau

Most women who come to me have already seen many doctors. They’re smart, successful, and used to solving problems - but when it comes to their health, they feel dismissed, confused, or simply stuck. I know how that feels, because I’ve been there myself.

Dr Brenda Lau

As a clinician, policy-maker, and educator, I’ve cared for thousands of women whose pain was misunderstood, minimized, or left untreated.

I'm not your typical pain specialist. As both a patient and physician, I’ve spent over two decades helping women reclaim clarity and control in a system that wasn’t built for them.

My mission is to translate complexity into clarity, so women can make informed decisions and find a way forward.

What truly sets my approach apart

I blend medical science with lived experience - both mine and that of the women I serve.

THE TRANSLATOR

I help women understand what could be happening in their bodies by translating medical information into meaningful language. I help connect fragmented information to see the bigger picture - because healing starts with understanding your symptoms, patterns, and root causes.

THE NAVIGATOR

Guiding you through broken systems:

The healthcare system can be overwhelming. Many women get stuck, not because they lack motivation, but because they lack a map of steps to move forward. I teach women how to work with their doctors, advocate for themselves, and move through barriers with confidence and calm.

THE ACTIVATOR

Turning insight into action:

Knowledge is only powerful when applied. I help women translate understanding into real-world change - actionable steps that improve health, restore energy, and rebuild trust in their own bodies.

The Path Forward: Translator, Navigator, Activator

"I don't want you to be frustrated with your healthcare providers. I want you to understand their limitations, work within them, and take control of everything else."

Building Systems That Work

For over 25 years, I’ve helped reshape how pain care is delivered in Canada:

  • Co-founded Canada’s national Pain Medicine subspecialty.

  • Led the establishment of the UBC Pain Medicine Residency program with multiple pain medicine training sites.

  • Built multi-disciplinary clinics -including Changepain Medical & Allied Health clinic - that have served over 65,000 patients.

  • Led patient care policy, specialist qualification and clinic safety standards to make care safer and more effective.

These outcomes didn’t appear overnight - they resulted from decades of learning, testing, and never accepting “that’s just how it is.”

Every change I’ve helped build - whether a program, a clinic, or a policy- is founded on the guiding principle that when people are seen and equipped with knowledge, everything works better.

Tools That Bridge The Gap

Too many women are left searching, waiting, or second-guessing their symptoms.

That’s why I created practical resources - Toolkits, N-of-1 Stories, and Pathways and Frameworks - to help women take control of their health journey with confidence.

Each one is designed to turn science into something usable - so you can understand your body, make informed decisions, and move forward with options.

Why Free?

My toolkits, stories, and frameworks are free because they’re part of a larger mission: to remove barriers, build understanding, and put power back where it belongs - with you.

Each resource is grounded in research, refined by real feedback, and designed to meet women where they are - whether at home, in the boardroom, or starting over.
